I stare at the photo of myself. It’s one that I know well, and I’m not entirely surprised that it’s in Jesse’s folder. He’ll see his photo in mine soon enough and oddly enough I’m not embarrassed by it. I’m relieved because that means he cares about me and maybe just as much as I care about him. It’s good, I’m glad it’s finally coming out and apparently, everyone knows it. A part of me just worries that he won’t feel the same or he’ll suppress it for what he might feel like is the good of the mission which is to get me back to the Dome.

I close the folder and just stare at the desk. I refuse to let Liliana see the look in my eyes right now. The look of want and wondering if I’m going to be enough for Jesse to finally tell me how he feels. I feel his hand on my knee under the table and it’s such a move that makes my eyes instantly look over at him. He just stares at me and gently squeezes my knee, unspoken words and feelings pass between us, and a slow smile creeps across my face. His mouth mirrors mine and I slide my hand under the table and lay it on top of his on my knee.

We both look at Liliana and she’s studiously ignoring us. Another surprise. I figured she would be basking in our show of emotion, ready to pounce with some snide comment or a back-handedcompliment. That seems to be her favorite thing when she’s feeling left out or unnoticed. She thinks that we haven’t caught on to her, but I have. Maybe it’s because of how I used to feel when I’d see popular girls in school, and I envied their friendships but it’s the same emotion. I can always see it when she feels this way. She’ll busy herself with some small tasks or act bored.

We sit like that with our hands touching, his hand on my knee. We don’t try to hide it or move and when she finally looks our way she steps forward and takes the folders from the desk. She walks back to the podium and sits them down with hers and finally turns back toward us. “You’ll both be leaving here in two days.” That surprises me because I figured our lessons would continue for several weeks or at least a few more days, then we would move on to something else. I guess I was wrong.

I speak up before Jesse has the chance to. “What do you mean leaving? Like never to return here?”

Liliana slowly nods her head up and down. “Possibly yes. You may return here at any time, but we will be putting both of you into the tunnels in 48 hours. There have been some incidents that have occurred on the outside that have us concerned for your safety here.”

Jesse snaps at her. “What incidents?”

Liliana doesn’t hesitate to answer, “We’ve seen an uptake in the amount of people hovering in the area.
